The study explores patterns of cognitive growth and later decline over the life span in a population with birth risks. Cognitive performance and structural brain changes are compared to healthy and typically developed controls. MRI scans are obtained at 40 years.
We are interested in studying how the lifetime trajectories are affected by different types of early cognitive disabilities, and what factors contribute to improved cognition / compensation by midlife. |
Cognitive dysfunction in childhoodAround 50% of those in the risk cohort group had learning deficits or other cognitive impairment at 5 and 9 years of age, 23% had several concomitant deficits. In the control group less than 20% had impairments.
